Boverket's new building regulations for waste spaces – what applies now?
New building regulations from 1 July 2025
Boverket's regulations specify that a building must have waste spaces or waste facilities to prevent inadequate waste management. The requirements are linked to the Planning and Building Act and concern hygiene, health, the environment, and waste management.
What the regulations mean in practice
- The space must be dimensioned for the fractions to be sorted in the property.
- It must be possible to clean, ventilate, and keep free from odors and pests.
- Accessibility applies to both residents and collection personnel – collection routes, threshold-free passages, and lighting.
- The placement must provide reasonable transport routes for the refuse truck.
How we design our environmental houses according to the requirements
Compfence environmental houses are built with a ventilated construction, washable surfaces, wide door sections, and clear fraction labeling. We produce building permit drawings showing how the requirements are met – see legal requirements for environmental houses.
Does it apply to existing properties?
The building regulations primarily affect new construction and major renovations. Existing properties are instead governed by waste regulations and the requirements for property-close collection, but the same principles are a good benchmark when building a new waste space.
