Composite vs wood for bin cabinets and environmental houses – 20-year calculation
What does the choice of material cost over 20 years?
The purchase price is only part of the calculation. A wooden cabinet needs to be painted or stained every three to five years, and exposed parts are often replaced after 10–15 years. Composite needs neither painting nor oiling.
Maintenance
- Wood: painting/staining, replacement of rot-damaged boards, graffiti requires repainting.
- Composite: rinsing with water, graffiti can be removed without destroying the surface.
Lifespan and appearance
Composite is dimensionally stable, color-fast, and rot-resistant. It does not crack or splinter, which also makes it safer in environments where children move.
Total cost
With painting every four years and a partial replacement after 15 years, the wood alternative in most calculations exceeds the total cost of composite already after 10–12 years – and the difference then grows every year.
Where is the material used?
The same composite is found in our bin cabinets, environmental houses, fences and screens, composite flooring, and outdoor furniture – making it easy to maintain a uniform color throughout the outdoor environment. Also read about the environmental impact of composite.
