Property-close collection 2027 - What does the new legal requirement mean?
New law on property-close collection from 2027
On 1 January 2027, the new law on property-close collection of packaging comes into force throughout Sweden. This implies a revolutionary change for how households and properties manage their waste.
What does property-close collection mean?
Property-close collection means that all households should be able to sort and leave their packaging waste in connection to their home. Instead of transporting waste to common recycling stations, each property should have access to sorting solutions on site.
Which fractions should be able to be sorted?
According to the new legal requirements, the following fractions should be sorted property-close:
- Food waste - for composting and biogas production
- Paper packaging - cartons and corrugated cardboard
- Plastic packaging - all types of plastic packaging
- Metal packaging - cans and tins
- Glass packaging - uncoloured and coloured glass
- Newspapers - recycled paper and newspapers
- Residual waste - other household waste
Who is affected by the new requirements?
The law applies to multi-family houses, housing cooperatives, rental buildings, commercial properties with residences and many villa areas.
